Our History

Originally Ross and Nancy Widman, two North American missionaries arrived in the country in 2006 and felt in their hearts the need to help eradicate poverty through education. With this objective they created a first Educational Center called 2nda Milla, which still works in the community of Friusa.

Extra Mile Hope Academy Bilingual School arose in 2021 due to the need to create a place for children from the Hoyo de Monteverde community who did not have a space in the Segunda Milla Educational Center; but at the same time the idea was conceived to attract families that have a stable economic condition, and are interested in their children receiving a bilingual education based on the Christian faith. In this way we can cushion the cost of operations to be able to cover the salaries of the teaching and administrative staff of the afternoon session in which most of the students receive sponsorship, from people of good will, for their studies.

Speech

From our Principal

Dear Hope Academy & 2nd Mile Missions Community,

It is an honor to introduce myself as the new Director of Hope Academy. I am Dominican and currently pursuing master’s degrees in Educational Center Management and Higher Education. I firmly believe that school is the place where a child’s potential is discovered, nurtured, and built; and I have been entrusted with the great privilege and responsibility of contributing to the nation that shaped me through this wonderful community.

We trust that, by God’s hand, during the 2025–2026 school year we will achieve great goals and meaningful learning. My commitment is that each of our students will discover their full potential and will not need to seek excellence elsewhere; for here, at Hope Academy, we recognize and cultivate the potential of every student because we share their roots and their journey.

My hope is that every Hope Academy graduate will leave knowing two things: who they are in Christ and what they are capable of accomplishing.

I am convinced that the pillars of excellent, high-quality education are built upon the commitment and collaboration between family and school.

I encourage you to work shoulder to shoulder—family and school—to make this new season the beginning of a journey of knowledge and values under the guidance of our God; knowing that everything we do must be done with the highest level of excellence, because we do it first for God, and then for others.

With gratitude and commitment,

Mr. Daly Manuel Suero.
